Thoroughly modern medic, BBC television This went out in 5 one hour episodes on BBC.2.

Thoroughly modern medic was a five-part BBC daytime series which sent today's medical students back to the 1950s. In a reconstructed 1950s hospital ward, six modern day students experienced the training methods of the day under the eagle eye of the Consultant (Dr Mike Smith) and the Registrar (Dr Jonathan Belsey). The students from medical schools throughout the UK had just finished their first year `on the wards’, having completed their scientific time. The different attitudes of the 1950s – of which the `consultant’ and `registrar’ were well able to remind them – came as quite a shock. The ward rounds were unscripted and `ad lib’ hence a student demonstrating the physical effects of a previous `good night out’ or, on one occasion the chewing of gum, was a gift to the social disciplinarian – the consultant. His harsh words were always, but always, fully backed-up by the registrar. His future depended upon it!

Mike is also a `resident GP' on Channel 5 TV News, usually on the 11.30a.m. program. He is called into comment on the top news stories of the day.
He has also just been part of a BBC radio 2 `pilot' comedy program which, if agreed, is aimed to go out in early 2008. He was a medical `straight man' to comedian Jason Byrne's comedic look at medicine today .
He has been and is a regular spokesperson for organizations - both commercial and charitable. This involves becoming familiar with the products or services being presented and then communicating them - in an understandable way - to the wider public.
Mike also regularly writes copy for companies or their Public Relation (PR) agents - again with the intention of making a potentially complicated medico/scientific subject readable.
He is currently involved (Feb. 2008) with a `probiotics' launch and has just written some medical copy for the award winning PR company Bray Leino.
Today's top news (6.02.08)? As fromer CMO of the nation's FPA, I was called in to comment on why the nation's women are nor getting the Long-acting reversible contraceptiion that they need.
Any minute now (June 2008), a book about the last 60 years of the NHS in this its 60th Anniversary year is being distributed. Each chapter is written by a doctor who has had experience in its many differenent aspects. They kindly asked me to write the chapter on the `Birth Control' services during this time.
